[S2 & S3] GCP Level 2 service-learning trip to Chiang Mai, Thailand in June

Dear all Sec 2 and 3 students,

Greetings from the Youth Service Team, comprising of myself (Mr Seth Tan), Mr Quek Yin Kang and Ms Madeleine Chew! We are the teachers-in-charge for an upcoming GCP Level 2 service-learning trip to Chiang Mai, Thailand in June.

I am writing this email to invite you to come on board with us on this trip.

This trip has a strong focus on science-related community service and outreach. Participants will have a fulfilling experience in applying curriculum learning in a community setting. This trip will also help you to uncover and develop your passion in giving to the community without strings attached and give you opportunities for deep personal reflection and mastery through experiences in service.

KEY OBJECTIVES

The key objectives of this trip are:
  • to provide students with exposure to a community development project that involves the integration of curriculum learning (in areas of science and/or technology) with actual community service
  • to provide students with opportunities for cross-cultural interaction with their Chiangmai counterparts

TRIP DETAILS

Below are the some important details of the trip:
  • The trip will be a 6-day 5-night trip and will be from 31 May (Sun) to 5 June (Friday) during the June holidays.
  • There will be an accompanying vendor which will help us look into administrative and logistical aspects (e.g. lodging, flight bookings, food, liaison with local partners, etc).
  • We are looking at only bringing a small team of 25 participants and 3 teachers for the trip.
  • There will NOT be any school subsidy $ for this trip as it is an opt-in trip.
  • The estimated cost for this trip is about $1250, but the final cost will be pending flight charges due to the holiday peak season in June.
  • There are limited places for this trip. The Youth Service Team will be selecting suitable candidates who had registered for the trip. All selected registrants will be notified in due course.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO TO APPLY

For interested participants, please discuss with your parents and get their approval before you apply/ register for the trip. This is especially so as there will not be any subsidies granted by the school to sponsor you for this trip (and any L2 trips for that matter). You will also need to check your personal schedule carefully to ensure that there are no clashes with other commitments, before you actually apply for the trip.

To apply, simply fill up the PDF application form. Alternatively, you can obtain a hardcopy of the form in my pigeon hole (Mr Seth Tan) outside the staffroom.

Send back the completed form to me via email or submit in hardcopy by next Monday, 30 MARCH, 2pm (deadline).

Hope to see positive responses from you and please feel free to email me (seth_tan@sst.edu.sg) if you have queries on the trip.

Cheers!

Mr Seth Tan
(on behalf of GCP L2 Chiang Mai team)
