Media Talent Development Programme (TDP) Special Interest Group is recruiting!

If you have the interest and talent in this area of media please drop Ms Patricia Ng an email (patricia_ng@sst.edu.sg) as soon as possible as the first session of TDP SIG will start on Monday 29 March 2021 at 3.15 pm in the video production studio. 

Please share the reason for your interest and if possible, share your experiences in any area of media work: photography, videography, special effects, photo-journalism, podcast, design work, drone filming, etc.

Sustainable Schools Competition: Microsoft X ZWSG

 Dear Students,

The programme is open to secondary school-age students (13-15 years old). Students will get a chance to hear from and be guided by mentors from Microsoft, Zero Waste SG, and other organisations. This will definitely give students a unique opportunity to learn about sustainability in a practical context and will be a meaningful out-of-school experience!

Timeline

Apr- Confirmation of teams (up to 10 teams)

Week of May 17 - Mentorship and preparation on problem framing, understanding context and how to pitch project idea (3 sessions, timing TBC)

28 or 29 May (before start of Jun hols) - First round of pitching/ elimination to go into second round (up to 5 teams will enter final round)

Jun to Oct - Mentorship during project preparation, implementation and data collection process (up to 8 mentorship sessions, including mass speaker sessions for students; dates and time TBC)

Nov - Project wrap up & final round of competition pitch

Students who have signed up for the competition must be fully committed to the above timeline. In addition, they must also be able to commit time to meet up with the teacher mentors on Monday afternoons during TDP time from 3 - 4.30 p.m. as and when requested by the teacher mentors.

If you are interested, please form a team of not more than 5 students and email Mr Lam Hin Chew (lam_hin_chew@sst.edu.sg) with the full names and classes by Friday 26 March 1 p.m. Students can only sign up once they have been acknowledged by Mr Lam through email.

Term 2 Unstructured Play

Dear Students,

Unstructured play will start on Wednesday 24 March, please refer to the information below. For this year, there will not be online registration using the QR code but registration will be on physical form.

Guidelines for Unstructured Play

Use of Venue

1. The use of the various venues will be based on first come first serve basis at the venue. Prior booking is not allowed. (See tables below for availability of venues and number of groups)

2. Once the number of groups allowed for each venue is fully taken up, groups that come later will be turned away. They are not to loiter around the venue.

3. Students must register their full names and classes using the file provided by the teacher on duty before they can start to play.

4. The use of the venues is only allowed during the recess breaks and with teacher supervision. If the teacher is not at the venue, students are not allowed to start their play.

5. No unstructured play should take place before and after school.

6. In the event of inclement weather, ISH and MPH may be used by other S&W classes for wet weather proramme, hence they would not be available for unstructured play.

 During Activities

1. Students should only play with members of their class of up to 8 students, with 3m distancing between groups.

5. Safe distancing should be at least 2m between individuals during these activities.

6. Students should end their play at least 5 minutes before the end of their recess to wipe down the equipment before returning them to the teachers.

7. The teachers will have the right to stop the unstructured play if the students do not follow instructions from the teachers.

The School Dental Service (SDS) will commence service to Sec 3 students from 22 Mar 2021 (Monday) onwards.

Students, whose parents have given consent earlier, will be required to report during school hours, upon request by the Dentist, to the mobile SDS bus stationed at the visitors' car park.

Issue of Personal Learning Device (PLD)

Dear Sec 1 Students,

We are pleased to inform you that your personal learning devices will be ready for collection from our IT Helpdesk from 17 to 19 March 2021 and we have informed your parents of the details via Parents Gateway.  As the collection is strictly by appointment only, please remind your parents to book an appointment for the collection using the on-line form that we have provided.  (Note: Student is required to be present for the collection.) 

The Acceptable Use Policy (click HERE to access) is intended to prescribe effective, ethical and lawful use of ICT resources by students and ensure a conducive and safe virtual environment in our learning community.  This policy applies to the use of the ICT resources owned and managed by SST, as well as those brought in for use by students in SST.  All students are to comply with this Policy.  Please read through to understand the terms of this Policy.

Join us in the concluding talk in Climate Conversations series featuring prominent ecologist and President of Nature Society (Singapore), Dr Shawn Kaihekulani Yamauchi Lum.

With origins stretching back to 1921 when the Singapore Natural History Society was formed, the Nature Society (Singapore) is a volunteer-led NGO dedicated to the appreciation, conservation, study and enjoyment of the natural heritage in Singapore, Malaysia and the surrounding region. Dr Lum's leadership of the Society since 2008 has been associated with many conservation and outreach initiatives that aim to make nature part of the Singaporean identity. He will share about the efforts by Nature Society focused on marine conservation and coastal cleanup, and how we can play a role in protecting our marine environments and biodiversity.

The programme will be hosted and moderated by Zhang Baoxin (Curator, Public Programmes).

ABOUT DR SHAWN LUM

(President of Nature Society Singapore and Senior Lecturer, NTU Asian School of the Environment)

Dr Shawn Kaihekulani Yamauchi Lum is a tropical rainforest ecologist. He was born in Hawaii and was educated at Harvard University and obtained his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley in 1993. Dr Lum joined the Natural Sciences and Science Education faculty at the National Institute of Education (NIE), Singapore before moving to the Asian School of the Environment at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in 2015. He is the current President of the Nature Society (Singapore).

Dr Lum’s work on forest fragmentation and regeneration has aided the protection of Singapore’s forests and formed the basis for public outreach of our natural heritage. He also does work in conservation biology and environmental education, and interacts with a wide range of people, from fellow researchers to naturalists, primary school pupils, and educators. He is a recipient of the President’s Award for the Environment 2017 and Public Service Medal 2020.

ABOUT CLIMATE CONVERSATIONS

Climate Conversations runs parallel to Planet or Plastic? exhibition and brings together climate scientists, ecologists and artists in a programme of talks that spotlights some of the most profound stories from the frontlines of conservation and climate innovation.

The series launched with a talk by Cynthia Doumbia (Director, International Exhibitions at National Geographic Society), who spoke about how this multi-year initiative harnesses storytelling to tackle the global plastic waste crisis and effect meaningful change. The second session by Intan Suci Nurhati (senior researcher at the Indonesian Institute of Sciences’ Research Center (LIPI) for Oceanography and National Geographic Explorer) highlighted issues in plastics management and her recent research work on the rising tide of pandemic-driven plastic waste. Mandy Barker (photographer and National Geographic Explorer), whose work involving marine plastic debris has received global recognition, shared how she has been working alongside marine scientists to transform data on ocean plastics into arresting collages of pollution in the third talk.

Shawn Kaihekulani Yamauchi Lum (President of Nature Society (Singapore), and Senior Lecturer, NTU Asian School of the Environment) will join us in the concluding iteration in the series.

Classroom Climate Survey (CCS)

Dear students,

The Classroom Climate Survey (CCS) is conducted each year to allow you the opportunity to share with your subject teachers your learning experiences in their classes. Your feedback will help your teachers and the school in making the learning environment even more conducive.

This year, the CCS will be conducted on 09 Mar (Tue) and 11 Mar (Thu). You will be given time after flag raising to complete the survey.

In the morning of the two days, you will receive an information email indicating the subjects which you need to provide your feedback on. The maximum number of surveys to be completed each day is two.

Your feedback is important to us and we want to hear from you. We hope you will provide honest and candid responses. Although your details are required, this is solely for tracking the completion of surveys. Your details will not be included when the survey results are generated for analysis.

Sec 1 CCA Reporting This Week

Dear Sec 1 students,

Hope you are having a fruitful time in SST so far!

It is time for you to embark on the next stage of your SST journey and join your CCA. All CCA sessions are compulsory as your teachers, coach and seniors work hard to organise enriching experiences for you. If you ever need to miss a session for any valid reason, you are to inform the teachers-in-charge beforehand via email or parent's letter. Before each session, you can consume your lunch in your classroom unless your CCA teachers assign you a table in Level 1. The training schedule and venues can be found here:

Please report to your CCA by this Wednesday (except Scouts and Media Club, which starts on Friday) based on the information in the spreadsheet above. Students in Show Choir (Dance) and all sports CCA are to report in S&W attire and track shoes. Others can report in either school uniform or S&W attire, unless informed otherwise. On the first session, you must inform the teacher-in-charge if you have any pre-existing injuries or medical conditions. Be sure to inform your parents of the dismissal timings and take note that some CCA's have different timings for upper and lower sec.
